Unveil Mauritania: A 7-Day Expedition from Desert to Coast

Day 1: Arrival in Nouakchott
Welcome to your Mauritania 7-day expedition! Arrive at Nouakchott International Airport and transfer to your hotel, located 35 km away (about 40 minutes). After check-in, take some time to rest and refresh. Depending on your arrival time, you can explore Nouakchott’s attractions, like the National Museum or the bustling markets. Enjoy a welcome dinner featuring traditional Mauritanian cuisine at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Nouakchott to Atar:
Set off at 7:30 AM for your Mauritania 7-day expedition. Head northeast towards Atar, around 450 km away (approximately 5 hours). Along the way, stop at Akjoujt for tea. Continue the drive to Atar and, upon arrival, check into your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring Atar, visiting local markets, and admiring the surrounding desert landscapes, especially in Azougi.

Day 3: Atar to Ouadane – Richat Structure

At 7:30 AM, leave Atar and drive to Ouadane, about 180 km away (approximately 3 hours). Upon arrival in Ouadane, enjoy a traditional Mauritanian lunch. Then, head to the stunning Richat Structure. It is also known as the “Eye of the Sahara,” located about 45 km from Ouadane, requiring around 1.5 hours of desert driving. After your visit, return to Ouadane, taking another 1.5 hours. Explore the ancient town, known for its well-preserved historic architecture and desert landscapes. In the afternoon, visit nearby sand dunes to enjoy the picturesque scenery.

Day 4: Ouadane to Oasis of Tanouchert – Chinguetti

Leave Ouadane at 7:30 AM and drive to the Oasis of Tanouchert. It is a beautiful palm tree oasis about 30 km away (approximately 1 hour of desert driving). Immerse yourself in stunning desert landscapes along the way, stopping for photo opportunities. After visiting the oasis, continue your journey to Chinguetti, around 60 km away (about 2 hours). Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and tea at your hotel. Chinguetti is one of the oldest towns in Mauritania and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its historic architecture, including the ancient mosque and libraries. In the evening, experience a magical sunset on the sand dunes. Enjoy dinner and traditional Mauritanian hospitality at a local guesthouse.

Day 5: Chinguetti to Amogjar – Terjit
At 7:30 AM, leave Chinguetti for Amogjar (around 35 km, approximately 1 hour). Visit the ancient Amogjar Pass, known for breathtaking views of the desert and surrounding landscapes. Continue your journey to Terjit Oasis (around 60 km, approximately 1.5 hours). Spend the afternoon relaxing at Terjit Oasis, swimming in natural pools, and enjoying a picnic lunch. In the evening, set up camp under the stars for a memorable desert camping experience.

Day 6: Terjit to Banc d’Arguin
Leave Terjit at 7:30 AM and travel to Banc d’Arguin National Park. The park is about 550 km away (6-7 hours of mixed paved, unpaved roads, and desert driving). Explore the diverse ecosystems of Banc d’Arguin, including coastal wetlands, sandy beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Take a boat tour of the park to spot a variety of bird species, including flamingos, herons, and pelicans. Enjoy a seafood lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the lagoon. In the afternoon, relax on the beach or swim in the clear blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Day 7: Banc d’Arguin to Nouakchott
At 7:30 AM, leave Banc d’Arguin and head back to Nouakchott. The journey covers around 340 km and takes approximately 4-5 hours, featuring a mix of desert and paved roads. Along the way, stop at scenic viewpoints and local villages to soak in the final moments of your Mauritanian adventure. Arrive in Nouakchott and transfer to the airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your Mauritania 7-day expedition.
