Discover the historic heart of the Sahara on a private 4-day Adrar Mauritania tour from Nouakchott. The Adrar region is the cultural center of Mauritania. It is home to ancient caravan towns, dramatic desert landscapes, and green palm oases. You travel in a private air-conditioned 4×4 with an experienced desert driver and a licensed bilingual guide. As a result, you see the country’s most famous heritage sites in one well-organized journey. This makes it ideal if you are short on time.
Adrar Mauritania Tour Route
Your journey starts with the drive north to Atar and the Almoravid ruins of Azougui. Next, you see Neolithic rock art at the Amogjar Pass and the Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara. After that, you explore the UNESCO World Heritage towns of Ouadane and Chinguetti. Both are famous for their stone mosques and old manuscript libraries.
On the last day, you visit the palm groves of M’Haireth. Then, you can swim in the natural spring pools of Terjit before returning to Nouakchott. Throughout the trip, you stay in selected hotels and auberges with full board. In addition, all fuel, permits, and entry fees are included.

Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a better guide and driver. The driver Omar was safe, courteous, and responsive, eg slowing down when I wanted to take a picture. The guide, Mohamed was very competent. Besides the tour, this is perhaps best demonstrated when my return flight was cancelled and then reinstated. First, he helped me get a hotel at late notice, then when the flight was changed again, he immediately called me and helped me get to the airport and get through security efficiently. This competence, local knowledge and thoughtfulness would simply not be available to the independent traveller or someone without Mohamed’s experience.
Adrar Tour Itinerary
This 4-day private expedition takes you from the capital Nouakchott into the heart of Mauritania's UNESCO-listed caravan towns. Discover Atar, Ouadane, and Chinguetti, see the Richat Structure, swim at the Terjit Oasis, and experience the beauty of the Sahara Desert. Ideal for travelers with limited time who want authentic cultural and natural heritage.
08:00 – Meeting and departure: Meet your guide and driver in Nouakchott. An optional stop can be made at the central market for currency exchange or supplies.
08:45 – Drive north: Depart on the main road toward Akjoujt. Camels are often seen along the route, offering good opportunities for photography.
11:45 – Rest stop in Akjoujt: A short break for traditional Mauritanian tea before continuing toward the Adrar.
12:15 – Continue to Atar: The road climbs gradually onto the Adrar plateau. Total distance for the day is approximately 440 km, with around 5 hours of driving.
14:30 – Arrival in Atar: Check-in at Hôtel Étoile du Nord, followed by lunch.
16:00 – Guided walk in Atar: Discover the regional capital of the Adrar, including the artisan market and the central mosque.
17:00 – Excursion to Azougui: A short drive to Azougui, the 11th-century Almoravid capital, to see the remains of its fortress among the palm groves.
18:45 – Evening: Return to Hôtel Étoile du Nord for dinner and overnight.
08:00 – Departure from Atar: After breakfast at the hotel, depart northeast on desert tracks toward Ouadane (approximately 200 km, around 3 hours of driving).
09:00 – Amogjar Pass: A stop at the sandstone rock shelters to see Neolithic rock art. The paintings show animals from a time when the Sahara was a green savannah.
09:45 – Continue toward Ouadane: Drive across the Adrar plateau on unpaved tracks.
11:30 – The Richat Structure (Eye of the Sahara): Visit a viewpoint over the Guelb er Richat, a circular geological formation about 40 km in diameter, best known from images taken from space.
13:00 – Arrival in Ouadane: Check-in at Auberge El Ghalawiya, followed by lunch.
16:00 – Old town of Ouadane: Guided visit to the 12th-century ksar (fortified town), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including its terraced stone houses and old defensive walls.
18:00 – Evening: Dinner and overnight at Auberge El Ghalawiya.
08:00 – Departure from Ouadane: After breakfast, check out and drive southwest across the sand dunes toward Chinguetti.
09:15 – Tanouchert Oasis: A stop at a small oasis community to see traditional date-palm cultivation, local water management, and the way of life of the desert inhabitants.
11:30 – Arrival in Chinguetti: Check-in at Auberge Eden.
11:45 – Old town of Chinguetti: Guided walk through this UNESCO World Heritage town, often described as the seventh holy city of Islam. Visit the historic mosque with its dry-stone minaret and one of the family libraries that preserve centuries-old manuscripts.
13:00 – Lunch: Traditional Mauritanian lunch at Auberge Eden, followed by free time to rest during the hottest hours of the day.
17:00 – Sunset on the dunes: Time to relax and take photos on the sand dunes near Chinguetti.
19:30 – Evening: Dinner and overnight at Auberge Eden in Chinguetti.
08:00 – Departure from Chinguetti: After breakfast, check out and begin the return journey.
09:30 – M'Haireth Oasis: A stop in this deep valley, known for its date-palm groves and cooler microclimate. Time for a short walk and photos.
10:30 – Drive to Terjit: A short off-road drive to the Terjit Oasis.
12:00 – Lunch at Terjit: Lunch in the shade of the palm-filled canyon, followed by a short guided walk to the natural springs, where a warm spring and cooler pools flow between high rock walls. Swimming is possible.
13:30 – Return to Nouakchott: Depart the Adrar on the main road to the capital (approximately 400 km, around 5 hours 30 minutes of driving, including a short rest stop).
19:00 – Arrival in Nouakchott: Drop-off at your hotel. End of our services.
