Richat Structure
The Richat Structure, known as the Eye of the Sahara, is a massive 40-kilometer circular geological formation in Mauritania’s desert. This UNESCO-recognized landmark features unique concentric rings of rock layers formed by erosion over millions of years. Once thought to be a meteorite crater, it’s now understood to be an eroded volcanic dome. The site also contains important archaeological remains, including ancient stone tools and burial mounds. Visible from space, the Eye offers spectacular aerial views and dramatic desert landscapes for adventurous travelers.
